A Rising Concern: Genetic Defects in Kerala's Newborns
The findings, compiled from the Newborn Screening Program data between 2021 and 2023, paint a concerning picture. Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, has seen a significant rise in cases, followed by Kollam and Malappuram. The numbers speak for themselves: a jump from 379 cases in 2021 to a staggering 1,237 in 2023, marking a 226% increase.
But here's where it gets controversial. While the report highlights this upward trend, it also acknowledges a critical gap in data. The committee notes that they haven't received the total number of children screened in each district, which is essential for a comprehensive analysis.
Furthermore, the report brings attention to the decreasing utilization of funds allocated for the screening scheme. In 2021, 41.52% of the funds remained underutilized, a figure that rose to 73.14% in 2023. The committee seeks an explanation for this concerning trend.
Genomics expert Dr. Vinod Scaria offers an insightful perspective. He suggests that the increasing numbers might not be as alarming as they seem. "Generally, the percentage of people with genetic disorders remains constant in a population," he explains. Most of these disorders have one of the child's parents as carriers, so the general upward trend shouldn't cause panic.
Dr. Scaria adds, "If the number of tests is increasing, it's a positive sign. More people are testing for these conditions, and a higher number of cases identified through newborn screening suggests that many more treatable conditions are being caught early."
