WNYC, New York's leading public radio station, is taking a stand against the recent cuts in funding for public media, a move that has sent ripples through the industry. To combat these challenges, WNYC is launching a major fundraising initiative, starting with their annual Stand with Public Media gala.
This year's gala is set to be a star-studded event, honoring some of the biggest names in media and philanthropy. The honorees include The Late Show host Stephen Colbert and his wife, producer and arts advocate Evelyn McGee Colbert; New Yorker editor David Remnick; and Ford Foundation president Darren Walker.
The gala also marks the launch of WNYC's powerful new tagline: “You Can’t Defund The Truth.” This slogan will be rolled out on Wednesday, coinciding with the kick-off of their pledge drive, and will even be featured on tote bags for generous donors.
The Stand with Public Media gala is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18th, in New York City. The Colberts will be presented with the Cultural Advocacy Award, Remnick will receive the Media Innovation Award, and Walker will be honored with the Philanthropy Leadership Award.
The event will be hosted by actor Richard Kind and will feature special appearances and performances from a stellar lineup of talent, including Ben Platt, Annaleigh Ashford, Noah Galvin, and Conrad Tao. An after-party, with Questlove as the DJ, will follow the main event.
Now, here's where things get interesting... Stephen Colbert's CBS show was canceled earlier this year, with the network citing financial reasons. However, the timing of this decision, just days before the FCC approved a takeover, raised eyebrows across the industry. Was this a coincidence, or something more?
Meanwhile, public media outlets across the country are still reeling from the significant $1.1 billion in cuts to federal funding. This gala and fundraising campaign are designed to help offset some of those losses, as NPR and PBS stations nationwide seek ways to fill the financial gap.
